CHINA: Global Climate Change and Environmental Sciences Delegation - December 2007
Recently, while world delegations were meeting in Bali to hammer out details on the Kyoto Treaty a delegation of United States Scientist were meeting with their Chinese counterparts to discuss the data of Global Warming. The first major conference was in Beijing with the Municipal Institute of Labor Protection or China’s EPA. Specific topics dealt with Environmental Quality Research and hazardous, materials technology, atmospheric pollution control and Industrial dust discharge. The next stop was in Xian at Northwest University which is the preeminent training facility for environmental scientists and global climate change across China. Our own Dr. Dale Meryman was the U.S. guest lecture to the faculty with a presentation entitled “Artificially Created Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment”. The delegates flew to Shanghai to meet with the Senior Engineer and Vice Director of the Water Planning and Design Research Institute. The scientists are dealing with large wastewater pollution issues in the major rivers such as Huangpu, Yangtze and Sung Jo. The World Bank has pledged millions of dollars for a concerted cleanup effort. Because of Dr. Meryman’s expertise in wastewater treatment many novel approaches were proposed to aid in cleanup and prevention efforts. The final stop was at the Polar Research Institute of China where power point presentations by both the Chinese and the Americans dealt with 10,000 year ice cover research at the McMurdo Station in the Antartica, the increase in ice flow buildup in the Antartic and other topics concerning the 300 year old news of the cyclic Global Warming issues. Dr. Meryman felt privileged to be asked by the State Department Organization to participate in this historic mission concerning Global Climate Change and Environmental Science.
