SPECIES HABITAT RESTORATION & DESIGN

Endangered & Threatened Species
As the Florida Endangered and Threatened Species Act of 1977 notes, this state has more endangered and threatened species than any other state in the continental United States. In order to protect these fragile populations, we must conserve and protect these species as a natural resource for future generations.

In Hillsborough County most of the original upland wildlife habitat has been replaced with urban, suburban or agricultural development. The remaining upland habitat is comprised of xeric and mesic natural plant communities, which are either uncommon, scarce, occur in very restricted geographic areas, or have few high quality sites remaining. Protection of these habitats constitutes SIGNIFICANT WILDLIFE HABITAT and is necessary to retain habitat diversity, wildlife corridors and to maintain healthy, diverse populations of Listed Wildlife Species.

Categories used to designate the status of the organisms included in the Florida List of Endangered, Threatened, Rare or Species of Special Concerns species.

  • Endangered - species in danger of extinction are those whose numbers have already declined to such a critically low level or whose habitats have been so seriously reduced or degraded by land alteration that without active assistance their survival is questionable.
  • Threatened - species that are likely to become Endangered in the state within the foreseeable future if current development trends continue.
  • Rare - species that, although not presently Endangered or Threatened are potentially at risk because they are found only within a restricted geographic area or habitat in the state or are sparsely distributed over a more extensive range.
  • Species of Special Concern - species that do not clearly fit into one of the preceding categories yet warrant special attention due to changing environmental conditions.
  • Listed species habitat is best maintained by understanding the needs of the listed species and directing preservation efforts to meet these needs. Meryman Environmental understands the environmental needs, as well as the importance of a cost effective developable land. Properly planned, both needs can be served, enhancing public relations of the project in the process.
